COMPONENTS
We decided to only use discrete through-hole components like the original and even hand-wind our own custom transformer for the Pulse Width circuit.
All components are high end brand semiconductors from Fairchild, ON, Wima, Panasonic, Xicon, Kemet.
Adding a High Pass filter to the sidechain adds a whole extra level of usability where the kick drum or other low frequency information is triggering unwanted compression.
THE SOUND
The Pulse Width Modulation compression type is quite rare and is a very unique sounding type of compression. It acts like thinning scissors, removing material from the waveform at 250khz intervals, based on the ratio and release settings.
It’s not a VCA, FET, Diode, VariMu so it is a great addition to your rack to add a sound you don’t already have.
It can go from very usable aggressive pumping compression to light transient shaving all very transparently.
It shines particularly on Toms, Drum Bus, Acoustic guitars & Piano (its my go to on acoustic guitar and toms)
