Submodular Synthesizer

Raison d'être

  • Providing a mixed interface (analog × digital) for processing mixed signals
  • Making it easier to develop custom modules as single circuit printed boards
  • Enhancing the interface of a modular synthesizer with full signal visualization
  • Simplifying the development of rich user interfaces running on any device
  • Experimenting with Low-Frequency Patching (think LFO, but for patching)
  • Using dynamic patching and rotary encoders to record patches and settings

Faceplate

  • 16 rotary encoders with RGB illumination and SPST switching
  • 16 color OLED displays (16-bit, 96×64 resolution)
  • 16 analog inputs (audio signals or CV levels)
  • 16 analog outputs (audio signals or CV levels)
  • USB Audio Class 2.0 connector (attached to XMOS)
  • HDMI connector (attached to Pi)
  • TRS 3.5mm stereo headphones connector
  • DB25 8-channel audio output connector

Backplane

  • Raspberry Pi 2 Model B
  • Built-in WiFi hotspot
  • 16-core XMOS XS1-U16A-128 microcontroller
  • 16-channel 24-bit 192 kHz analog-to-digital audio converters
  • 16-channel 24-bit 216 kHz digital-to-analog audio converters
  • 16-channel 16-bit analog-to-digital CV levels converters
  • 16-channel 16-bit digital-to-analog CV levels converters
  • 16-channel analog mixer
  • 32×16 analog switching matrix
  • 8 submodule bays
  • Extension port for companion module
