The TR-909's clap featured one control the user could adjust: volume. That was not okay with us.

Audio example of the actual module in use, showing the range of sounds it can produce.

It can also give good results as a noise/random source, and can even produce random triggers, with "Pitch" turned right down.

In the interest of full-disclosure, a couple of things worth noting:

  • The VCA of this module doesn't completely close, so there is a tiny amount of bleed-through from the noise oscillator. I corresponded with the designer about this, and apparently it's a limitation of the DIY version, and not a problem with my build
  • The DIY version has three stacked circuit-boards, so is significantly deeper that the factory-built version (see photos), and is therefore not suitable for shallow "skiff" cases
