Frequency Detector Model 232 by Black Corporation & Buchla

The Model 232 is a recreation of a rare module that was the cornerstone of the recordings of Morton Subotnick, translating vocal and instrumental gestures into voltage. It’s various analog circuits in one, combining an envelope follower, frequency detector, and internal gain leveling in a single module. That opens it up to tracking acoustic instruments or the voice (or even whistling) into a pitch-tracked sound source, as well as a control voltage source for applying external signal to envelope, pitch, and other elements. The Buchla reissue adds new, top-of-class pitch detection for even more reliable and musical performance.

With CV and gate output, you can connect this to an external oscillator, though you can also simply use the internal VCO for all-in-one functionality. The Buchla reissue has also expanded on the functionality of the original with selectable scales for different applications and greater interoperability with other equipment, and additional waveforms for the internal VCO.

Features:

Incoming signal tracked from 27.5 Hz to 2500 Hz
Automatic gain control, acting effectively as a compressor/signal leveler for incoming signal
Frequency detection
Envelope follower
Gate/trigger extraction
Pitch-to-CV converter
Phase-locked loop for the VCO
Internal VCO with four waveforms (expanding on the sine wave output available on the original)
